US: Northwest pear harvest smaller

California and the Pacific North West expect a smaller crop of pears this year which could see pear prices go up. The pear prices are affected by the supply, economy and the Mexican tariff. The Northwest produces 86% of US pears.

According to Oregon business today as of May 28, there were 809,000 boxes of pears from the 2009 PNW crop yet to sell compared with 818,000 a year earlier. That shows the industry has done a very good job marketing the crop, given the challenge of record volume and the recession.
