At the end of March the world press was excited about the 'Pineberry'. This albino variety of the strawberry is new on the market and available in the UK. The white strawberry with red flecks tastes like pineapple. The pineberry is originally from South-America, but is now being grown in Holland.
Beekers Berries from Made, Holland, grow normal strawberry as well as a few exclusive varieties in their greenhouses. In 2008 Wil Beekers signed an agreement with breeder Hans de Jongh for the exclusive production and marketing of a few special varieties; the Pineberry, the raspberry-strawberry en the Moschata (large strawberry). These varieties are traded through Vital Berry and have been available in small volumes from 2009.
