End of conflict over banana tariffs

United States had signed an agreement with the European Union aimed at ending a longstanding conflict over banana tariffs.
Conflict over banana trade is the longest-running in the WTO, brought about by the EU's import regime introduced in July 1993.

The EU market for bananas is estimated at 4 billion dollars, what is going to allow a considerable profit for the exporting companies.

The producing countries ACP (Africa, Caribbean Islands, Pacific), which before this agreement were protected, do not envisage a serene future. Or they will manage to be imperative on the market thanks to a differentiation of the productions towards the quality and the long-lasting or they will try to re-negotiate the help granted by the EU in conformance with the «intensification of their competitiveness ".

The specialists consider that prices are going to fit according to the volumes. As the exporters are going to try "knocks" to take advantage of the decrease of the customs duties, the market is going to disintegrate and European prices will fall.

South American producers already begin to find that the prices are not rather profitable.
